Honduras
Honduras is a Central American country with a long Caribbean Sea coastline. It's one of the poorest countries in the Americas and relies heavily on agriculture.
番茄影院 started work in Honduras in 2024. Our weapons management programme includes training local personnel and restoring weapons storage facilities.
Situation in Honduras
Honduras has one of the highest murder rates in the world. More than 80% of murders in Honduras are committed with firearms, compared to a global average of around 40%.
The prevalence of firearms feeds into the country's problems with organised crime and criminal gangs.
Honduran firearms regulations are weak and lead to delays in the processing of ballistics data. Critical information often disappears, and the data is not used to prosecute criminals effectively.
This lack of judicial process allows gangs to thrive, creating greater risks in underprivileged communities.
番茄影院's work and impact in Honduras
Since 2017, 番茄影院 has been working to create a safer future for the people of Honduras. We work on weapons and ammunition management, with a focus on destroying obsolete weapons and ammunition. This helps to prevent unplanned explosions and avoid firearms being diverted to organised crime.
We've established a transparent weapons destruction programme and assisted with upgrading weapons stores to make them secure. We strive to ensure the meaningful participation of women and other minority groups in the security forces.
We deliver specialised courses in explosive ordnance disposal and safe handling of small arms and ammunition. These courses equip officers to adopt best practices for small arms and ammunition.
